Evaluation of supports for remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attending high school in major centres

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students living in remote areas in Queensland are supported to attend boarding schools in larger centres through Transition Support Services.  Outpost Consulting undertook an evaluation of the service to assess the impact of the support on student transition from their home community.

The evaluation included interviews and focus groups with a sample of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students from various regions who received transition support as well as interviews with school principals and transition support officers.  Recommendations on how to improve support to students to achieve better academic and social outcomes were taken up in a redesign of the program.
